So Here’s What I Do

What’s a Health Coach? What’s a Wellness Advocate? What is it that you actually DO, Carolyn? Do these questions keep you up at night? Well, read on and sleep well.

As a Health Coach

As a Health Coach, I work with people individually and in groups to address specific health and wellness concerns. We address these concerns through natural means. For example, initially we would look at diet to address lack of energy; we would look at self-care to address stress; and so on. Ultimately, however, we need to look at all these elements and make sure there is balance among them.

As a Wellness Advocate

As a Wellness Advocate, I do essentially the same thing, but in addition to diet, self-care, and exercise, I add essential oils into the mix to be able to provide a much more in depth and a much broader service to my clients.

Essential oils are a perfect supplement to diet and exercise to improve health and maximize wellness. To a certain extent, they pick up where the benefits of a healthful diet and regular exercise leave off.

Detox

For example, consider detoxing. I focus to a certain extent on detoxing the body because it’s a real foundation to health. Importantly, you have an opportunity to determine whether or not you have any food allergies or sensitivities. But you also give your body a rest from dealing with toxic foods so that it can focus on true health.

Essential oils can deepen this detox. Lemon oil, for example, is a natural detoxifier. Briefly, when the liver encounters an unknown substance – also known as a toxin – it wraps that toxin in a fat cell and stores it since it doesn’t know what else to do with it. Lemon oil has the ability to flush these toxins out of the system, thus enabling the body to release that fat cell along with the toxin.

But detoxing the body isn’t complete without detoxing your environment. Many of the household cleaners you use are liquid toxins. You can opt for “green” cleaners, but why not cut down on the expense of these items AND add a delightful fragrance to your home by using essential oils?

The various citrus oils cut through grease, detoxify and disinfect, and leave a clean, bright aroma. In addition, they are antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antiviral. Some essential oils (see below) can even boost immunity.

All you need is a glass spray bottle, some water, and the oils to make your own cleaning products. Or you could add a little unscented Castile soap to the mix for a sudsy cleaner. It’s simple; it’s safe (these oils can be ingested); it’s inexpensive; and it works.

And yes, essential oils do windows!

Immunity

I mentioned boosting immunity above. A healthy body can fight disease. An unhealthy body not so much. Diet is obviously important in keeping the body healthy and in fighting form, but essential oils increase the body’s inherent immune response.

Lemon, Juniper Berry, Marjoram, Sandalwood, Vetiver, White Fir, Orange all support and strengthen the immune system. These oils can all be diffused and used topically; in addition, some can be ingested.

Stress

Stress causes illness. The illness might be what eventually is deemed the cause of death, but make no mistake — stress is the root cause of much of 21st century illness. We are assaulted by stress-inducing factors every day and in every way. The very air we breathe is stressful for the body to process. The noise, the pace of life, the constant barrage of email and other demands on our attention — all breed stress.

We often turn to comfort food – or, worse, cigarettes or alcohol – to relieve our stress. Why not reach for an essential oil instead? Lavender is the poster child for the stress-reducing essential oil. But there are many others in this category. Clary Sage, Frankincense, Geranium, Roman Chamomile are just a few of the oils that calm and relax both the body and the mind.

I use such oils on a daily basis. I like to diffuse my own blends of calming oils (to minimize my stress level) and invigorating oils (to keep me alert) in the office. At night I use de-stressing and relaxing oils to help me sleep.

Working With Me

My main work in all this is to educate people about reinventing — and taking charge of — their healthcare. Yes, it’s great when that knowledge results in income, but the primary job is education. I will talk to anyone, individually or in groups, about essential oils and healthcare generally. I want to teach people about their options. They can make their own choices about what options they do and do not want to pursue.
